The DJ’s DJ. (Rest In Peace) 20 April 1953 - 24 December 2024.
Alfredo Fiorito, born on the 20th April 1953 in the city of Rosario, Santa Fe Province, Argentina (pronounced ro’sar-jo) a port city on the West Bank of the Paraná River, famous for its Neoclassical, Art Nouveau and Art Deco architecture. So, naturally a birthplace for Alfredo and another famous city son, Lionel Messi who was born there too.
Alfredo’s early creative journey was as a journalist, but Argentina in the ’70s, under the restrictive rule of Junta, was not the place for the creative mind of a young word craftsman with Alfredo’s humble, humility and soft genuine soul, so at 23 years old he set his life’s journey onto Spanish tierra firme.
An Ibiza resident for nearly 50 years from September 1976 and a local DJ over 40 years, Alfredo is widely recognized as the 'Father of the Balearic beat’, an eclectic influence of dance music that can flow from Gurevitsch "Spanish Inquisition" to Ultravox “Hiroshima Mon Amour” to Grace Jones “La Vie En Rose”.
Alfredo was the tipping point for many UK DJ’s including Nicky Holloway, Danny Rampling, Johnny Walker and Paul Oakenfold, who upon returning from watching Alfredo DJ at Amnesia in Ibiza in 1987, went on to create a dance music Tsunami in Britain that literally rolled around the world aided by the phenomenal waves of MDMA. One of the rare generational era’s, like the Disco music period, when the whole world seems to be dancing to the same inspirational beat.
A statement from Amnesia, the Ibiza club Alfredo significantly helped put on the map for dance fans and the first Ibiza venue ever to stage a live Essential Mix for BBC Radio 1 in 1996 which featured Alfredo too. It reads: “Thank you for the nights and beats we shared together. Your music and vision shaped the sound of Balearic Beat and the soul of Amnesia. So many memories were made through your energy, your legacy will live on our dance-floor forever. You will never be forgotten.”
DJ Danny Rampling quote: “DJ Alfredo, great trailblazer, legendary DJ, humble, passionate creative talent, inspirational, intelligent, articulate, good soul. Ibiza will not be the same without you. Thank you for changing so many of our lives through the music. An eternal music legacy into the Ibiza heritage, social history & culture, continues with love
My heartfelt condolences love, deepest sympathy to Alfredo’s beloved daughter Lola and son, DJ Jaime Fiorito, family close friends, God bless RIP
Cathy Battistessa quote: “Alfredo, he was uniquely gifted and I believe his true super power was his vision, not only the music. He gave me sacred advice I hold in my heart always and he was kind, gentle and humble always with me. He inspired the people who were fortunate to meet him either on the dance-floor or personally. Alfredo literally honed his music to his true vibration as a conscious soul. His beauty, humility and charm have earned him a firm place in the pantheon of Ibiza (or Eivisa) folklore more than the fabled Nostradamus quote of Ibiza being the final place on earth for humanity. Soar freely Alfredo now unburdened by the cumbersome body and life’s challenges.. you have a heart grand enough for 1000 people .. Love always and forever, Gracias mi heroe”
Womack and Womack’s “Life’s A Ball Game” record was a regular final song at Alfredo’s Amnesia nights in Ibiza. Life is indeed a ball game and the magic lesson is being an evolved human willing to pass the ball forward to those around you. Unknowingly to millions of dance music fans and many DJ’s too, Alfredo Fiorito’s time on earth would change the course of the world with the music he chose to present to his dance-floors with that ever present big smile. The true alchemist of Ibiza, the Balearic King, whose gentle influential being changed the world and the lives of the people of Ibiza.
Danny mentioned that without the eclectic DJing of Alfredo at Amnesia in the summer of '87 it is unlikely that the legendary Shoom would have been created with a certain Carl Cox as the warm up DJ for Danny and Jenni. It is not too far a stretch to consider no Spectrum at Heaven for Paul and no Trip for Nicky at the Astoria. Those three club nights ignited a fundamental change in London with seismic waves rolling out of the epicenter from the capital city, including music, fashion and a fresh forward thinking attitude that life is for living with an expression, individually and collectively.
All influenced by a soft spoken DJ and kindred spirit from Ibiza via Argentina. Often in life the embryonic beginning of such an influential shift for millions of people is the last to profit and be acknowledged. So let it be remembered for always that DJ Alfredo Fiorito was the enzymatic wizard who sparked the music revolution of the late 80's into the 90's which touched all of our lives.
The Youtube link below is a playlist example of Alfredo’s Record Box. A diverse playlist of 77 tracks highlighting Alfredo’s broad choices of music to present as a DJ. I have had it playing all day and it has been a gift to listen to. Thank you and bless you Alfredo Fiorito.
